Harvard had an amazing first day at the individual nationals in Washington D.C. yesterday with three men and three women advancing to today’s semifinals of the main draws.
Men’s Semifinals
#1 Kush Kumar (Trinity) vs. #4 Saad Abouaish (Harvard)
#10 Timmy Brownell (Harvard) vs. #14 David Ryan (Harvard)
Women’s Semifinals
#1 Reeham Sedky (Penn) vs. #4 Sabrina Sobhy (Harvard)
#3 Gina Kennedy (Harvard) vs #15 Amelia Henley (Harvard)

While Saad, Gina and Sabrina were seeded to reach the semifinals, others had to upset higher ranked players in the earlier rounds. Here are some highlights from yesterday:
– David Ryan ’18 (Harvard’s #4) beat Penn’s #1 and #3 seed in the tournament, Andrew Douglas, in the first round and Dartmouth’s #1, Alvin Heumann, in the quarters
– Timmy Brownell ’20 (Harvard’s #2) beat Rochester’s #1, Ashley Davies, in the first round and Princeton’s #1 and #2 seed in the tournament, Youssef Ibrahim, in the quarters
– Amelia Henley ’20 (Harvard’s #5) beat Princeton’s #1 and #2 seed in the tournament, Olivia Fiechter, in the first round and Yale’s #1, Lucy Beecroft, in the quarters
– With Kayley Leonard ’19 reaching the quarterfinals of the women’s draw (before losing to teammate, Gina Kennedy), Harvard players will earn 7 first team All America honors this year
– Julien Gosset ’21, Eleonore Evans ’20 and Sue Ann Yong ’19 are through to the semifinals of their respective B division brackets and are still in the running to become second team All American. With the new system, all 16 A division players are guaranteed All American status while the winners of the 4 B division draws become second team All American.
