11-seed George Crowne’s ’23 Cinderella story at the individual nationals came to an end in the Pool Trophy final today after Trinity’s 4-seed, Mohamed Sharaf, played flawlessly and recorded a 3-0 win, clinching this year’s men’s individual championship.
Crowne had upset the seedings by beating Penn’s #1, Drexel’s #1 and Cornell’s #1 before today’s final. But Trinity’s #1 proved to be too strong on the day.
The final marks the last match of Crowne’s college career. Crowne was a part of a recruiting class that consisted of him, Victor Crouin ’22 and Marwan Tarek ’23. Crouin won the individual national title in 2019 and 2022. Tarek was the individual champion in 2020. Both Tarek and Crowne took a gap year during Covid and are finishing their college careers with 4 national team titles and 3 Ivy championships under their belts. The accomplishments of this class speak for themselves and understandably, these players have been the backbone of the program’s success and culture during their time.
In today’s B draw finals, Serena Daniel ’24 was already 2-0 up against Princeton’s #3, Liyen Teoh, but Teoh fought back to 2-2. Daniel, who played #4 for the Crimson this year, showed tremendous grit and was able to capture a 14-12 win in the fifth to secure a spot on the second-team All America for the first time in her career.
Meanwhile, Tate Harms ’25 lost his B draw final against Trinity’s #3, Joachim Chuah, in five close games. Brecon Welch ’25 also faced too big of a challenge in her final against Aishwarya Khubchandani from Cornell.
With Daniel’s victory, Harvard will earn a total of 7 All America honors this year (4 first-team and 3 second-team). This comes after both teams won the Ivy League championships and national team titles earlier this year.
The teams will celebrate their successful season at the annual team banquet at the end of this month. If you’re interested in attending, please let us know and we will send you more details.
