David Ryan ’18 finished his collegiate career today as the individual national champion after beating Trinity’s Kush Kumar in the men’s A division final. Ryan (the #14 seed) saved two match balls before clinching the match 12-10 in the fifth game.
On his way to the final, Ryan upset the seedings by beating four higher ranked players:
1st Round: Andrew Douglas – Penn’s #1 and #3 seed of the tournament
Quarterfinal: Alvin Heumann – Dartmouth’s #1 and #6 seed
Semifinal: Timmy Brownell – Harvard’s #2 and #10 seed
Final: Kush Kumar – Trinity’s #1 and #1 seed
An incredible achievement from our senior co-captain!
On the women’s side, last year’s winner, Gina Kennedy ’20, played very well to reach the final where she met Penn’s Reeham Sedky for the second year straight. This time, Sedky proved to be the better player and won the match in four close games. On her way to the final, Kennedy beat two of her teammates: Kayley Leonard ’19 in the quarterfinal and Amelia Henley ’20 in a close semifinal.
In the Holleran North B Division, Sue Ann Yong ’18 beat Eleonore Evans ’20 in the final and became a second-team All American. In addition to Yong, seven Harvard players earned first-team All America honors in the men’s and women’s A divisions. A great way to end the season.
You can read more about the finals on the CSA website and access replays on Squash On Fire’s website.
The teams will celebrate the successful year at the annual team banquet on March 23rd.
