Current and former members of both our men’s and women’s varsity teams competed internationally this summer representing their respective national teams on the global stage.

At the WSF World Junior Championships in Chennai, freshman Marwan Tarek ’22 lead Egypt to win the team title playing at the #1 position for his country against England in the final. Tarek also finished second in the individual draw out of 128 top junior entrants (this was after he won the world junior title last year, beating another Harvard freshman, Victor Crouin ’22, in the 2017 final).

Freshman Hana Moataz ’22 reached the women’s quarterfinal of the individual draw while sophomore Julien Gosset ’21 and freshman George Crowne ’22 reached the round of 16 of the men’s draw. In the team event, Gosset and Crowne helped Canada to a 5th place finish overall.

Junior co-captain Timmy Brownell ’20 and senior co-captain Sabrina Sobhy ’19 competed for Team USA at the Pan American Championships in the Cayman Islands in late August, soaking up the sun (and some wins!) before coming back to campus. The women’s team, also featuring Amanda Sobhy ’15 and Haley Mendez ’15, won the team championship and the men’s team reached the semifinal before falling to Mexico.

In the individual event, Sabrina had a great run and reached the final where she eventually lost against her sister, Amanda. Timmy Brownell reached the round 16 before bowing out to eventual men’s champion, Diego Elias of Peru.

Sabrina and Amanda also played in the women’s doubles event and won the gold medals. Timmy competed in the mixed doubles event with Haley and they reached the quarterfinals.

Great summer for Harvard Squash!
