Women win Ivy Championship
Our women finished their regular season with a 9-0 win over Yale last week and won the 2016 Ivy Championship. This year’s title is the 20th championship in program history. The team’s record this season was an impressive 10-0 (7-0 Ivy League).
The men’s team wasn’t able to upset the Bulldogs and lost a close match 6-3. The Crimson fell behind early in the first round of matches when co-captain Devin McLaughlin ’17 fell and dislocated his shoulder and had to retire. Yale was able to keep the lead until the end despite many close matches.
Yale remained undefeated in the Ivy League this year and won the men’s title outright. Harvard finished second along with Columbia (both with a 5-2 record).

CSA Team Nationals at Yale – February 26-28, 2016
Our women’s team will go into team nationals as the #1 seed and will face #8 Cornell in the first round this Friday. The men’s team is ranked #6 in the nation and will play #3 St. Lawrence.
For the first time in college squash history, the men’s and women’s team nationals will be played on the same weekend. The women’s match against Cornell will start at noon and the men’s match will begin at 2:30pm on Friday at the Yale courts.
CSA Individual Nationals at Chelsea Piers – March 4-6, 2016
This year’s individual tournament will be a historic event too, taking place at an off-campus venue for the first time ever. The best players in the country will compete at Chelsea Piers (Stamford, CT) in a couple of weeks.
Following the semifinals on the Saturday (March 5), the championship will feature a gala bringing back many of the past champions.

Wins against Columbia, Cornell & Brown – Today’s Yale match to decide Ivy titles
Both of this year’s Ivy titles will be on the line this afternoon when both the men and women take on Yale in New Haven, CT. Our women have already secured a share of the title but the team would earn the championship outright with a win against the Bulldogs today. The men need a win against Yale to share the title.
Today’s match will not be streamed live unfortunately.

This past week was a busy one for the programs: Both teams took wins against Columbia, Cornell and Brown. The closest one was the men’s Columbia match. It wasn’t until the last round of matches that Madhav Dhingra ’18 clinched the deciding match for the Crimson to win 5-4.
The men went on to beat Cornell 8-1 and Brown 9-0. Meanwhile, our women’s team didn’t drop a single match against the three teams.

Teams on the road this weekend
A week after the Trinity match, the Harvard Squash teams are traveling to New York to play Columbia and Cornell this weekend. The match against Columbia starts at noon today and the one against Cornell is on at 11am tomorrow.
Unfortunately, there won’t be any live streaming available this weekend. Results and match recaps will be posted on www.gocrimson.com.
Women beat Trinity – Men lose against #1 ranked Bantams
Last week, our women continued their undefeated season in Hartford by beating Trinity 7-2. The match was much closer than the score suggests with many of our players battling through four and five game matches.
Our men played well but eventually fell 7-2 against the Bantams. Trinity’s men’s team hasn’t lost a match this season and is looking like the favorite going into team nationals in three weeks. However, the top 8 teams are very even this season so it’s anyone’s guess who will end up on top.

Teams heading to Trinity
The Harvard Squash teams are about to jump on the bus and drive to Hartford, CT, to play against Trinity this afternoon. As always, an away match at Trinity is expected to be very tough.
Trinity men are unbeaten so far but had a close 5-4 match against Rochester last Sunday – a day after our men’s team lost against Rochester 5-4 (match recap and results below).
On the women’s side, Trinity has lost to both Stanford and UPenn while our women beat both of them. Having said that, today’s match will be a difficult one and could go either way.

St. Lawrence & This Weekend
After losing a close match against St. Lawrence on Monday, our men’s team is getting ready to face Rochester tomorrow (Saturday). If you can’t make it to the Murr Center, you can watch the match live on http://www.
The second match of the weekend against F & M has been cancelled due to the impending winter storm.

UPenn, Princeton & TOC
Both teams win against UPenn and Princeton
The Harvard squash teams played their first matches of the year this past weekend and brought home critical wins against both UPenn and Princeton.
After losing against Dartmouth in December, our men’s team bounced back and beat UPenn 6-3 before winning against Princeton 9-0. Our women recorded the same scores against both teams. The women’s win against UPenn was particularly significant as UPenn beat Harvard last season and won the Ivy title.

Sobhy beats world #2 at the TOC – playing in the quarterfinal tomorrow
Amanda Sobhy ’15 took one of the biggest wins of her career against world #2, Raneem El Welily, at the Tournament of Champions in NYC yesterday. Amanda will play against Alison Waters in the quarterfinal tomorrow (Tuesday) at 2:30pm.
Our teams will be at Grand Central Station supporting Amanda so if you’re in the area, stop by to say hi and watch the match. Tickets for sidewall seats cost $10. And as a reminder: We have an alumni hit-around and get-together at the Harvard Club of New York later that night. The event starts at 7pm.
The college season continues next week with matches against St. Lawrence (Jan 18th), Rochester (Jan 23rd) and F&M (Jan 24th).

Happy Holidays from Harvard Squash!
While our players have finished their final exams and are off for winter break, here’s a quick update on:

Men’s team upset by Dartmouth, women remain #1
Our women’s team took a comfortable 9-0 win against Dartmouth at the start of December. The women’s record is now 2-0 and they are ranked #1 in the nation.
Meanwhile, our men lost their match 5-4 against the Big Green. Although we were missing 2 of our top 9 players, Dartmouth proved to be a very strong and well-trained team that truly deserved the win. Our men’s team was obviously disappointed by the result but we still believe that a shared Ivy title is within reach this season. More info on the upcoming matches against UPenn and Princeton below.

Blair Metrailler ’00 and Jason Michas ’13 to lead the Friends Group
As you probably know, longtime co-chairs, Hope Prockop ’90 and Bill Kaplan ’77, have decided to turn the leadership of the Friends group over to Blair Metrailler ’00 and Jason Michas ’13. Hope and Bill have done a tremendous job in the recent years. They have been an essential part of the board and have volunteered their time and energy to making our Friends group one of the best ones in the country. We thank Hope and Bill for everything that they’ve done.
We would also like to thank Reed Endresen ’11 for his work on the board as a co-chair. Reed will also be stepping down but he will stay closely involved with our NYC events and alumni.
The coaches fully trust Blair and Jason and look forward to working with them. We are also excited to welcome Libby Welch ’95 and Tim Wyant ’00 as honorary chairs to help and support our two co-chairs.

> Penn & Princeton at Harvard – Jan 9-10th
We are hosting Penn and Princeton at home this year and both of the matches are key in deciding the Ivy title. The matches take place on January 9th and 10th at the Murr Center. Before the Princeton match on Sunday, we will be thanking our former co-chairs as well as acknowledging Rene Mendez & Leslie Henshaw ’P15, ‘P17 for their extremely generous gift of $100,000 to our program. Athletic Director, Bob Scalise, will be speaking before the men’s Princeton match on Sunday (Jan 10th) at noon.

Stanford and Ivy Scrimmages
Before we start the holiday weekend, here’s a quick update on the first weeks of our college season:
Women beat Stanford in season opener
Our women played their first official match against Stanford last weekend and took an important 8-1 win. The match was certainly closer than the scoreline suggests; none of the individual matches were one-sided.
Stanford could actually be one of the top teams this season: They beat #2 ranked Trinity two days after the Harvard match.

Both teams reach Ivy Scrimmage finals
Before the official season started, the Ivies gathered at the Ivy Scrimmages at Yale. Both Harvard men and women reached the finals of the tournament. Our men won against Brown (9-0) and UPenn (8-1) while our women beat Brown and Yale without dropping a match to make the final.
In the final, the men’s team lost a nail-biter against Yale. The closest match was played at the #8 position: Senior Matt Roberts took an early lead in the fifth game before losing the decider in the tie-breaker. Yale used the momentum and eventually won the match 5-4.
On the women’s side, Harvard lost against a strong UPenn team. The score was 7-2 but many of the matches were very close and could have gone the other way. Additionally, our team was missing Sabrina Sobhy who will most likely play #1 on the ladder.
Based on the scrimmages, both teams will have to rise to the occasion in order to be in contention for the Ivy titles this year.
Upcoming matches
For the last match before winter break, both teams will travel to New Hampshire to play Dartmouth next Tuesday (Dec 1).

New Season & Ivy Scrimmages
As the college squash season is about to start, we want to update you on what’s going on with the Harvard teams. It’s going to be another exciting year!
Ivy Scrimmages
Both of our teams start the season at the Ivy Scrimmages at Yale this weekend. While the results don’t count towards the official rankings, teams will get a sense of which programs will be competing for the Ivy titles this year.

Class of 2019
Both of our squads are exceptionally deep this year. While the women graduated a big class in the spring, we’re welcoming 3 strong freshmen to the program: Sabrina Sobhy, Kayley Leonard and Sophie Mehta. All 3 represented their countries at this year’s World Junior Championships (Sobhy and Leonard played for USA, Mehta for Canada) and are expected to play in the top 9.
The men’s team only lost one top 9 player after last season. Our 3 freshmen (Jack Cooper, Alexi Gosset and Ethan Shoihet) are all top juniors and capable of making the top 9 already this year.
